I am not a number! I'm Portmeirion. (Photo heavy)

Portmeirion is a fanciful, Italianate village at Minffordd, near Penrhyndeudraeth, on the Welsh coast. It was the work of architect Clough Williams-Ellis who built it to prove that development of an area need not lead to its desecration. It is a gallimaufrey of designs, with strange and unexpected details in every nook and around every corner.

On a sunny day it can genuinely feel like a Mediterranean town, with odd little shops, cafes, plazas and terraces; sculptures, fountains, arches, stairs and gardens.

It is perhaps best known in the UK as the location for the cult 1960s TV series The Prisoner, in which Patrick McGoohan played the former secret agent known only as Number 6.

Let the photos speak for themselves:

I'm enjoying your holiday posts:) I like Portmeirion especially down near the estuary where the boat is. Great to see your photos:)

I remember being really puzzled about where he was being held when that TV show was running and I thought it was somewhere really exotic and foreign. I was amazed to find that it was in Wales. (Not that Wales is not exotic.) The thing I found most surprising when I visited there, was that No. 6 seemed to have lived in a gift shop!

I love all the surprises that are in store for us all around the world and right around the corner. It does look very exotic.

My husband ( The Old Grump) says, 'He doesn't understand why no.6 wanted to get away from such a lovely place'. I never could work out the bouncy balloon thingumajig.

I know it well AJ and I love it. Not least because it is a super place to top up my collection of pottery. There is such a lovely atmosphere there too. Enjoyed the photos.
